Tameshiwari “Break”

Article written by Sosai.

Tameshiwari means "break." You can not separate completely from karate. When it comes to karate, people usually associate it with the breaks, convinced that the value of karate lies in the breaks, their ability and experience. However, the true value of karate lies in technology, art and spirit and not in the Tameshiwari.
The breaks were only part of karate and the biggest mistake is to give a high value. The karateka should not give a misleading picture of karate, by giving much importance to these demonstrations.

I've traveled all over the world and many times I have noticed that there is too much emphasis on the breaks and, therefore, the big mistake that the ability of karate is based on the breaks is widely accepted. This happens in the U.S., where the word "karate" is immediately associated with the famous beat of "Song of the hand."

I can not overemphasize the Tameshiwari is simply a part of karate, not the whole. The essential idea and spirit of karate is to develop and complement the personality of each one's own body, ability, mind and spirit. The Tameshiwari is only one element use in search and perfection of these skills.

However, when considering the "boom" of karate throughout the world I am forced to admit that the Tameshiwari has played a very important asset when it comes to karate more popular, because people get very much. When the Korean War began in 1950, held an exhibition and many foreigners were invited, especially the military. Not very interested in kata or kumite, but when the breaks were made all remained motionless. They were fascinated by the demonstrations and eventually became a big hand in the room.

When I visited thirty-two states in the USA, there was a similar reaction (from March to November 1952), so kata, kumite and kihon were not well received, but as soon as it began the Tameshiwari the thousands of people present there remained silence and then broke with a resounding applause.
