Number System: Japan has two number systems, one is native and the other is of Chinese origin. The numbers of Japanese origin are used in statements concerning with age, and when it comes to number of objects. The numbers of Chinese origin are used in action, money and distance. Because Japanese shi is the root of a word that means death, the number four (shi) of Chinese origin is rarely used, is commonly used as a substitute for the number 4 (yon.) of Japanese origin. The use of these two systems is complex, however Karateca may develop well if you learn the first 10 numbers of Chinese origin.
